How to Wear Your Holiday Party Outfits All Year Round

The holiday decorations are down, or in my case some of the holiday decorations are down... The parties and family get-togethers are now fond memories. The excitement for shopping for the perfect holiday outfit is over. It’s January, and well, that’s that… And my friends, that fabulous holiday outfit that you spent weeks searching for; that same holiday outfit that you went a “tad bit” over your budget on buying; and yes, that holiday outfit that you had tailored for the perfect fit is now just lying there. It’s wanting to be worn but it’s January and you can’t possibly step out wearing all that glitz and glamour. Well, you actually can! There are ways you can still wear that holiday outfit, or pieces of it, without looking like you didn’t the memo that that holidays are over. Here are some of my stylist tips on how you can take your favorite holiday outfit items and wear them throughout the year.

That Sequin Item

Want to hear something great? Sequin is a big trend for Spring 2018 so go ahead and continue to sparkle and shine. You might be thinking that sure sequin is great for a night out, but can I really wear my sequin top or skirt to work? And the answer is, yes. The key here is to let the sequin item be the focal point of the outfit and not overwhelm it with too many accessories or other glittery items. For example, pair your sequin skirt with a pastel spring sweater, muted handbag, minimal accessories and pumps. The sweater and lack of accessories help soften the boldness of the sequin skirt leaving you with a fun spring office look. You can carry this over into the summer with a light tank top and into fall and winter with a darker colored lightweight sweater.

That Red Item

The color red is synonymous with anything festive. Sometimes it’s hard to think of wearing red when there isn’t a party to go to. But if this past fall has taught us anything about the color red it’s that it is a very powerful color and it can most definitely be worn any time of the year. As luck would have it, red continues to be a big color for spring. My stylist tip would be to embrace the color! If your style and personality lend itself to wearing an all red pantsuit then go for it. If you’re in middle and want to wear your red dress into spring, I’d say layer it with work pants and pumps. And if all you're looking for is to hold onto that comfy holiday red sweater for a little bit longer you can wear it with black ankle pants, a trendy plaid blazer and kitten heels.

That Velvet Item

Velvet is such a rich and luxurious fabric that it’s perfect for any special event. It can also be worn as an everyday outfit. Velvet is another item that continues into spring and beyond. With everyday silhouettes like velvet tees, pants and jumpsuits, incorporating this fabric into your outfit rotation just got a little bit easier. My stylist tip on wearing velvet for an everyday look is to keep it simple. Since velvet is such an opulent fabric you want to tone it down with the other pieces in your outfit. A velvet top could be paired with denim and flats. Or a velvet jumpsuit could be layered with a stripe tee or a white button-down shirt for work. Add just a few fun accessories for an easy look.

Wearing Velvet After the Holidays

And those are just some ways to get more mileage out of your holiday clothing items. Now I’d love to hear from you, what are your favorite ways to incorporate your holiday clothes into your everyday wardrobes?

Wishing you all a very happy, healthy and peaceful new year!

9 to 5 Dressing and Beyond

When there's no time for an outfit change, you've got layering and accessorizing...

The hibernation is over and summer is in full swing!! With warmer weather comes a lot more to do and I for one am taking full advantage of the sun after the horrific winter we had on the East Coast. I find that I'm running around a lot more with so many different activities throughout my day and I have absolutely no time to stop and change. Even when I'm on vacation and I'm supposed to be "relaxing" my days are still jam packed. An afternoon of sight-seeing could easily take me right into dinner and really, who has time to schedule in a stop at the hotel...

Then of course, there's a "normal" work day. Work, to afternoon activities, to dinner to home. Again, when is there time to stop at home and change? So, what do I do? I rely on comfortable clothing items (after all, you're in them all day) and layer and accessorize. Here are some tips on how you can extend your wardrobe to take you from 9 to 5 and beyond.

As an example, I'll use the day I had yesterday. My morning was, as usual, insane.. But, I laid my clothes out the night before so I saved a lot time. (Click here for info on this time saving tip). Dropped my daughter to camp and I was off to a small business meeting. This part of my day required a professional look. So I turned to my trusty black pants (a must have!) and comfy yet polished layered t-shirt and cardigan. I also added some fun accessories- a long necklace, earrings and trend right cuff bracelets. Nude color flats rounded out the outfit. Cardigan not your thing? Use a blazer or jacket. T-shirt not your thing? Use a short sleeve or sleeveless blouse. Would never wear a flat shoe? Trade those out for comfortable wedges.

From there headed to the office. I had no other appointments, but a ton of work so I could relax a bit. Still in "work mode" I did leave the cardigan and earrings on, but the necklace & bangles came off.

Time to pick up the little one from camp and shuttle her around to her various activities. Then to dinner. So, off came the cardigan and earrings and on came the sunglasses.

The day had come to an end and I finally changed. This time into my PJ's :) and caught up on all my fashion magazines.

While this example reflects a work day- you can still translate layering, accessorizing and comfortable dressing to most daily situations. Whether it's a day on vacation, going from a play date to date night, from work to dinner with friends or out on a date.

Now I'd love to hear from you. What are your tips on dressing from 9 to 5 and beyond?

Stylish Work Outfits

According to a survey conducted by the Bureau of Statistics in 2012, married women living with children under the age of 6, and fall into the “working full time” employment status spend, on average, 8 hours a weekday doing work and work related activities. In other words, a 1/3 of working moms (mom working outside of the home) spend their weekday at work. That’s a lot...

As soon as I started writing this post on stylish work wear, I quickly noticed that things were not adding up… Some of the occupations that moms have require strict dress codes, or mandate a certain “professional” look. Sometimes these dress codes clash with mom’s personal style. Taking it a step further- personal style is something that represents who you are, and if you’re spending a 1/3 of your day wearing something that doesn't represent you, that really doesn't seem like a great way to be spending your day….

No matter if you’re a doctor, teacher, lawyer, WAHM, etc and your personal style is traditional, modern, trendy etc, rest assured, you can maintain a professional look while letting your personal style shine. While professional dress codes and personal styles vary, here are just a few overall ways to achieve the winning professional / personal style combination.

The Blouse Switch- A business suit is a business suit, it could be a bit boring. One way to let a little of your personality be seen, is to wear a blouse that represents you. Pick a blouse in your favorite color or pattern or print and pair it with a traditional suit for a professional / personal style balanced look.

Add a feminine floral printed blouse to a navy pant suit for a whole new professional look.

Add a ruffle blouse to the staple black suit for a fashionable work look.

Ditch the Blazer- If your dress code allows it, leave the blazer at home and instead, pair your button down shirt with a colorful cardigan, wrap sweater or crew neck sweater.

Pair a grey skirt and white button down with a cobalt blue (or any color of your choice) cardigan.

Forget the button down and blazer all together. Wear a turtleneck with dress pants for an updated professional look.

Accessorize- Accessories are key to any outfit. Whether you’re trying to figure what to wear to work, or to a summer barbecue, it's always a good idea to add an accessory. You don’t have to go over the top with accessories, something as easy as adding a watch (see my post on accessorizing with a watch here) or simple earrings can allow you to bring out your personal style.

Add a belt, watch and refined bangles to a classic black dress and you have a transformed look. Don’t forget to add the classic, yet powerful, trench coat for a look that will command attention.

Update the Basics- Depending on your personal style and workplace rules, one way to update the basics would be to switch out the traditional cut pant suit for one with a slimmer silhouette. Another way is to update your blazer- go from a traditional lapel to a narrower one, or a different collar all together. Also, have a little fun and really bring out your personal style by mixing and matching your basic suits. A camel blazer paired with navy pants a fun twist on a traditional look.

The black and white trend continues this year. Let your trendy side come out at work with black pants and a boucle black and white blazer.

Update your black skirt suit with a flare skirt and shawl collar blazer.

Are there any other things you do to transform your work wear to bring out your personal style? I'd love to know!
